As of this week, all but 2,716 students have been accounted for and their status documented. A cross-agency team accomplished this by working with districts, cross-referencing databases, and making phone calls.
The PED and its partners – the Early Childhood Education and Care Department; the Indian Affairs Department; the Office of African American Affairs; the Children, Youth and Families Department, the Human Services Department and the Graduation Alliance – have called hundreds of families since early January, talking directly to some and leaving messages for others. The state Children, Youth & Families Department has introduced a much-needed, innovative lifeline for New Mexico kids who may be suffering from abuse and neglect – or are aware of someone else who is.
Knowing that youth today are most comfortable communicating via text message, CYFD recently launched a first-in-the-nation text-based platform that allows reporting directly to CYFD’s Statewide Central Intake.
“We tried to recreate the #SAFE experience, where people call that number from their cellphones…,” said spokesman Charlie Moore-Pabst. “Now, they have the option of reporting to Central Intake with a text message at 505-591-9444.”
It’s no surprise that reports of child abuse and neglect in New Mexico and elsewhere dropped precipitously with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Outside family and caregivers, kids spend more time at school than anywhere el ....

CYFD Launches Text-Based Reporting Service For All New Mexico Youth

CYFD NEWS

New Mexico is the first state to create a system where reports of child abuse and neglect may be taken completely by text message.
ReachNM makes specially trained personnel available to answer questions from youth and connect them with the support they need 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
The average child now has a cell phone by age 11 and texting is their most comfortable form of communication, according to Arizona State University research. ....
