Robot jellyfish could help service offshore windfarms

Roboticists and engineers are working to address this problem, searching for new ways to create machines that might help repair, maintain or inspect the undersea components of the growing offshore industry. My colleagues and I have found a solution to this problem, designing underwater robots inspired by nature s smartest swimmers: the ultra-efficient moon jellyfish.
Traditional aquatic robots are designed for two main purposes: for efficient, long-distance navigation across open stretches of water, and for tasks requiring high manoeuvrability close to submerged structures. Both types of robot are effective, but few robots combine efficient travel with high manoeuvrability. That means most aquatic robots are too clumsy and clunky to support the offshore industry without also harming the undersea environment. ....

Tuesday, 16 February 2021 - 21:26
Energy Minister Udaya Gammanpila has stated that there is no change in the decision taken to hand over three northern islands belonging to Sri Lanka to three Chinese companies for a joint energy project to be implemented with China.
He was responding to a question raised by a journalist at a media briefing at the Government Information Department today. (Video of the Ministers response in English at the end of the Article)
The Cabinet had approved the allocation of Delft, Analativu and Nainativu Islands for the project on January 18.
India concerned
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s recent decision to pull out of the East Container Terminal (ECT) deal with India and Japan is not the only challenge to New Delhi’s interests emerging this year according to Indian  media reports. A week before reneging on the 2019 Colombo Port terminal agreement, Sri Lanka cleared a Chinese energy project in three islands off Jaffna peninsula that are ba ....

International tourism will never again be as it was, says Tourism Minister Stuart Nash. Photo / Supplied, File

Lost tourism
While Minister Stuart Nash s comments about the future of tourism in New Zealand may seem overly harsh, he is right in saying that tourism will not return to what it has been.
Visitors from
Australia will probably be about the same level but the conditions that made possible large numbers from further afield are unlikely to return.
Many of these were young adventurers who could afford the ever-cheaper fares that competing airlines provided and there was little concern that they could get jobs back home when their trip had ended. ....

New Delhi, Feb 15 (IANSlife) Celebrating friendship and companionship during these challenging times, five portraits taken by artist Michelle Poonawalla in her home city of Pune, are part of an ongoing exhibition in an Ahmedabad gallery.
Poonawalla, an artist who lives and works between London and Pune, is showing this new series of drawings as part of Kagaz , a group exhibition of works on paper which runs until February 26 at 079 Stories.
For Poonawalla, drawings and works on paper represent a very personal and emotive medium, allowing her to delicately portray the emotion of the subjects. As with Poonawalla s larger body of work the drawings are intended to create a moment of reflection for the viewer and ask them to think about their surroundings and the wider world. ....
