Mouse sperm generated in rats

Pluripotent stem cells (PSCs) can make all the tissues including gametes such as sperm and eggs. Researchers from the National Institute for Physiological Sciences in Japan report a robust method for the generation of gametes from PSCs using the body of rats that cannot make gametes. Notably, they successfully generated mouse PSC-derived functional spermatids in rats. This approach will become a useful system for the generation of PSC-derived germ cells in the future. ....

The jaws of life - how hypoxia exposure affects jaw cartilage growth

Researchers from Tokyo Medical and Dental University (TMDU) have found that cartilage growth in newborn rat jaws is inhibited in a group of animals exposed to intermittent hypoxia, or periods of low oxygen. They observed a thinner layer of cartilage in the jaws, but not in the tibias of the rats. These interesting results show how various cartilage throughout the body differs, as well as the importance of oxygen in proper jaw cartilage growth and development. ....
