Arts & Culture Newsletter: Photojournalist Don Bartletti's 'The Road Most Traveled'

I’m
David L. Coddon,
and here’s your guide to all things essential in San Diego’s arts and culture this week.
Among the films to be screened during the first-ever
San Diego International ShortsFest is
“The Roads Most Traveled,” an emotionally involving 24-minute retrospective of the work of photojournalist Don Bartletti.
Bartletti spent 40 years in a distinguished career that took him from the Vista Press, to the bygone Oceanside Blade-Tribune, to the then-San Diego Union and eventually to the Los Angeles Times, where he would win a Pulitzer Prize for his photojournalism in 2003.

The focus of “The Roads Most Traveled,” directed by Palomar College’s Bill Wisneski, is Bartletti’s visual documentation of the migration of Central Americans to the U.S. This includes a harrowing and heartbreaking experience riding atop freight cars bound for El Norte with his camera and little else, “an assignment,” Bartletti says ....

To all those who had tickets for or planned on getting some for “An Evening With Sutton Foster,” scheduled for March 21 at Copley Symphony Hall but obviously canceled, take heart. I’ve got a consolation prize for you. For 35 bucks, you can watch
New York City Center Digital’s presentation of “Sutton Foster / Bring Me to Light.” It’s an hour’s worth of the Broadway star at her most effervescent bantering with friends and cohorts, sincerely addressing her fans and, of course, singing many beloved Broadway tunes. ....

Arts & Culture Newsletter: At Lux, Baseera Khan explores identity

I’m
David L. Coddon,
and here’s your guide to all things essential in San Diego’s arts and culture this week.
To say that there’s more than meets the eye when observing the artwork of
Baseera Khan would be an understatement. Deep within the materials Khan uses in multidisciplinary projects are both inner explorations and experiences with and within a complex world.
“I think about material and its production and infrastructure and how it influences economies,” said Khan, who is the current artist-in-residence at
Lux Art Institute in Encinitas and whose works are on exhibit there through June 5. Khan said of the creative process: “I think about some geopolitical things, some historical timelines, and then I hone in on the material based on how it actually creates identity.” ....

Arts & Culture Newsletter: At Pacific Arts Movement, spring has sprung with film showcase

I’m
David L. Coddon,
and here’s your guide to all things essential in San Diego’s arts and culture this week.
After a year’s hiatus because of the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic,
Pacific Arts Movement’s Spring Showcase of films celebrating Asian, Asian American and Pacific Islander identity is back.
The festival, which begins tomorrow and runs through May 2, returns at a time when, says Pacific Arts Movement Artistic Director Brian Hu, “More now than in a generation eyes are on the Asian American community in many ways.”

“Now is an opportunity to show that there’s more to the Asian American community than just victimhood and there’s more to supporting the community than telling us ‘We’re here for you.’” ....
