NHRA Adds Bristol to 2021 Schedule, Postpones Virginia Bristol to become race in Countdown for the Championship; 50% capacity not good enough for NHRA at Virginia RON LEWIS The NHRA is changing it s schedule on the fly and adding a race to its Countdown to the Championship playoffs in the process. On Wednesday, NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series officials announced that the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol (Tenn.) Dragway is back on the schedule. The event was canceled for 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and was left off the original 2021 schedule. In addition to the Bristol news, the NHRA announced postponement of its June 4-6 scheduled event for Virginia Motorsports Park. No make-up date was announced. Virginia joins the earlier postponed Pomona event on the sideline. No word yet on a Pomona makeup. ....
The final weekend at Atlanta Dragway has arrived and that means all the stars of the NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series will try to grab the historic last win at the 40th and final Lucas Oil NHRA Southern Nationals. It’s also the first race in Atlanta since 2019 for most of the classes due to the COVID-19 pandemic, while Pro Stock will be making its first appearance at Georgia’s House of Speed since 2018. Nearly all drivers have some sort of memory at Atlanta Dragway, whether it was picking up a noteworthy victory or taking part in a memorable weekend. But everyone racing this weekend will have a takeaway by competing in the final event at the track. Only four, though, will leave with the Wally at the final appearance in Atlanta, a moment that will go down in history. To get there, teams will have to be on their game immediately, as there will only be two qualifying sessions before eliminations. There was some great racing in the Grand Prix at Imola. Max Verstappen qualified third in his Red Bull and was in first place exiting the first corner. He gave Lewis Hamilton a taste of his own medicine by pushing him off the circuit at Turn One. Later in the race, Hamilton showed why he’s a seven-time world champion by going off course, backing up until he could get turned around (as a friend of mine said, he’s not of this world; everybody else would try to drive out and wind up getting stuck) and then fighting his way back up to finish second, about 20 seconds behind Max. Lando Norris finished third for McLaren. ....
