World Surf League event in Sydney halted after shark sighted

SYDNEY (AP) A shark sighting temporarily halted competition in the World Surf League event at Sydney’s Narrabean Beach on Sunday.
The second heat of the event was in progress when the shark was sighted and surfers were called from the water.
Competition was delayed for 15 minutes, until organizers were sure the shark had left the area.
Three-time world champion Mick Fanning of Australia was onshore Sunday when the sighting happened. Fanning had a well-publicized encounter with a great white shark during a surfing competition near Port Elizabeth, South Africa in July 2015. ....

If you’re good enough at riding a surfboard, you can ride waves that most people wouldn’t consider riding. That’s just one of Mason Ho’s specialities, and it’s one of many. Take, for example the short film you see above. The waves are not good in the normal sense of the word. But Mason Ho surfs waves, good or bad, in such a way that the wave looks fun. Very fun. Of course, not everyone could do that. And that’s why we love watching it so much.

Jamie O’Brien is no stranger to injury. Broken bones, countless sprains, tweaks, and bruises are part of parcel of his life. Surfing one of the world’s most dangerous waves as much as humanly possible will do that to a guy, but after years of thrashings, Jamie O’Brien’s body finally said “no more.”
He recently underwent surgery to fix a ruined knee, and after a bit of rest and rehab, Jamie O’Brien is body surfing again. While he isn’t quite ready to surf on a surfboard just yet, we’d say a whomp session still counts. In a speedo, of course. “They went in there and they cleaned it up,” O’Brien said about his surgery. “They sucked every little piece out that was in there getting in the way.” ....
