A Profile in Pluralism: Ashfaq Taufique - The Aspen Institute

Ashfaq Taufique has called the South home for more than 45 years. And there’s nowhere else the devout Muslim would rather live.
Taufique is president emeritus of the Birmingham Islamic Society, and one of its original members. Born and raised in Pakistan, Taufique immigrated to the United States when he was 25 years old. The retired mechanical engineer attended college in Texas before moving to North Carolina and Georgia and finally settling in Alabama in 1989.
A member of the Inclusive America Project’s Powering Pluralism Network, Taufique is candid about his experiences with religious discrimination and his thoughts on pluralism and America’s ideals. ....

Inclusive America Project Statement on January 6th Insurrection

Inclusive America Project Statement on January 6th Insurrection
At the Inclusive America Project, we call upon ourselves, our neighbors, and our leadership, to always choose the ideals of democratic rule, to hold tight to what makes this country great – our differences.
Yesterday, in an attempt to halt the certification of the election and the peaceful transfer of power this country has embraced since the first President of the United States stepped down nearly 223 years ago, the current occupant of the White House chose instead to incite a mob of supporters to attack the U.S. Capitol building.
In response, over the last two days, social and traditional media have been awash in either/or declarations that “this is not who we are” or that, “this is exactly who we have always been, but we are now unmasked.” ....

Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo address the State Department s second religious freedom ministerial.
Last year, American support for religious freedom survived COVID-19.
The right to free speech held firm amid racial tensions.
And vigorous backing of the First Amendment endured a contentious presidential campaign.
So concludes the 2020 Becket Religious Freedom Index, which will monitor the resilience of the United States’ “first freedom” through the yearly challenges to come.
“Americans understand religion as a fundamental part of an individual’s identity,” said Caleb Lyman, director of research and analytics at The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty. ....

David K. Gibson
It is normal, at the end of the year, for organizations such as ours to assemble a “best of” list of stories. It’s a recognition of great work and a small thank you gift to those who have supported us.
We don’t have to tell you that 2020 was not a normal year.
But even in the maelstrom of a pandemic, social unrest, and political division, the important work of individuals and programs that are a part of the Aspen Institute has continued and it is work that shouldn’t be overlooked. ....
