Turkey’s talks this week with its regional rival Egypt is an attempt to decrease its geopolitical isolation and make Ankara look more like a reliable ally to the United States, analysts told The Media Line.
The Egyptian Foreign Ministry tweeted on Wednesday that ministry officials began meeting in Cairo for two days of “political consultations,” after years of fraught relations sparked by the 2013 ouster of Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi, who was a member of the Turkish-supported Muslim Brotherhood. ....

Ten years ago, in late 2010 and early 2011, the Arab world experienced a series of convulsions that tore apart the Middle East as we knew it. Starting in Tunisia, where a young fruit vendor named Mohamed Bouazizi set himself on fire to protest corruption and police abuse, angry demonstrations spread throughout the region. Some of the world’s longest-ruling leaders were toppled within months. There was a sense of optimism, that the long-suffering citizens of Arab nations were finally rising up to demand basic human rights and dignity in secular, youth-led popular uprisings. ....

Isolated Erdogan seeks rapprochement with Egypt

Facing increasing international isolation, while pressure is increasing on Ankara with the recent US sanctions, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday expressed his intention “to strengthen relations with Egypt, if current diplomatic contact between the two countries leads to positive results.”
For his part, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu in an interview with Anadolu Agency said: “We have contacts both at the level of intelligence and foreign ministries with Egypt. Diplomatic level contacts have started”. He hastened to add that “lack of trust is normal” and added that neither side put forward preconditions. “Negotiations take place and continue under a certain strategy, a road map.” ....
