Poverty causes crime, says cop
A police chief has stated that tackling poverty and inequality is the best way to reduce crime. In an interview to mark his retirement as chief constable of Merseyside police, Andy Cooke said that if he was given £5bn to cut crime, he would put £1bn into law enforcement and £4bn into tackling poverty. “The best crime prevention is increased opportunity and reduced poverty,” he said. “That’s the best way to reduce crime.”

Patel knocks Facebook encryption
Priti Patel says Facebook is “blinding” itself to the issue of child abuse by adopting new security measures that will make it more difficult to catch paedophiles. CAIRO -The Egyptian Minister of Transport, Kamel al-Wazir, carried out, on Tuesday, a wide reshuffle in key positions at the Egyptian Railway Authority, in an attempt to deflect the popular anger over recurring of train crashes.
This comes at a time when the Egyptian public is pressing for all officials, including the  most senior, to be held accountable for these disasters, regardless of their positions, not excluding cabinet members.
On Sunday, the Benha train wreck north of Cairo, which resulted in the death of 11 people and the injury of hundreds of others, renewed speculation about an imminent government reshuffle in Egypt. ....

Egypt has witnessed many train accidents in recent weeks, with dozens of people being killed. The first accident was in late March and was due to a collision between two trains in Sohag Governorate in southern Egypt, which resulted in 199 injuries and 20 deaths. In mid-April, another accident occurred in Dakahlia Governorate, north of Cairo, where two carriages derailed due to a train exceeding the speed limit in a maintenance zone, injuring 15 people. The latest incident occurred on Sunday in another Egyptian governorate, Qalyubia, which is adjacent to Cairo. Here, four carriages derailed and overturned, leading to at least 11 deaths. ....

Egypt arrests 23 for Sunday's train accident


CAIRO: Hamada Al-Sawy, Egypt’s public prosecutor, has ordered the arrest of 23 defendants involved in Sunday’s train accident in Toukh, which killed 23 people and injured 139.
Those arrested include the train conductor, his assistant, the supervisor of the railway maintenance in the area where the accident occurred, the general director of track renovations, the general director of maintenance, mechanical engineers, and a group of workers and technicians specialized in the maintenance of train vehicles.
Al-Sawy also ordered the arrest of the director of the railway engineering department in the area of the accident, as well as another engineer. They face charges of negligence and failure to observe laws and regulations while performing their jobs. ....
