50 Years Ago: 'All in the Family' Changes Television Forever

We often mean different things when we talk about what it means for a TV show to be great, so here s a possible definition:
All in the Family, which debuted on Jan. 12, 1971, scored high on a trifecta of popularity, artistic accomplishment and groundbreaking moral and social seriousness.
It s the combination of these elements that make it one of the greatest shows in the history of American television. The series was the passion project of television writer and producer Norman Lear, a working-class Jew from Connecticut whose irascible father was put in prison for forgery when Lear was nine.
Forty years later, Lear was working as a comedy writer and director in Hollywood when he came across an article about a long-running British TV show called ....

Norman Lear hit 'All in the Family' shook TV when it premiered in 1971

USA TODAY
Fifty years ago, on Jan. 12, 1971, All in the Family premiered. Its warts-and-all look at real-life issues was a shock to controversy-averse television that sent reverberations through American culture.

But TV legend Norman Lear, who served as executive producer with Bud Yorkin, broke the timid rules of television by injecting timely and controversial social issues, such as racial prejudice, sexism and Vietnam. (He also introduced a toilet flush – or turlet, as Archie pronounced it – to the TV sitcom.) ....

All in the Family | Description, Cast, Characters, & Facts

All in the Family became one of the most successful sitcoms of its time. The show was based on the popular British comedy
Till Death Us Do Part (1965–75) and was adapted for an American audience by producers Norman Lear and Alan (“Bud”) Yorkin. Breaking new ground with its often controversial subject matter,
All in the Family became the top-rated show in the United States for five consecutive years and won four Emmy Awards in a row for outstanding comedy series. Much of its success came from its frank and satirical treatment of sensitive or important topics, such as race, gender, sex, bigotry, and social inequity. The willing and deft portrayal of these topics made a dramatic impact at the time and a lasting influence on television. ....
