GUATEMALA CITY (Reuters) -U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris promised U.S. support to tackle issues such as corruption, in meetings with Guatemalan civil society leaders on Tuesday as the United States seeks to stop an increasing number of migrants fleeing the region.

Upon completing my PhD at the University of Miami, I returned to Trinidad and Tobago in 2018. The first change that I noticed moving back home was the large number of Venezuelans almost everywhere I went in supermarkets, malls, taxis, and bars, even in the countryside where I lived. Eager to practice my Spanish, I often struck up conversations with Venezuelan migrants who were willing to speak to me, as almost none of them knew any English. From time to time, I hired Venezuelans to do odd jobs around the house. One day I offered Carlos, a migrant whom I had recently met, a hot lunch prepared by my mother after he was finished working. The latest shipwreck in the Caribbean has highlighted the need for safe migration pathways, particularly in the Covid-19 era when many borders remain closed, two UN agencies said on April 26.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the UN refugee agency, UNHCR, expressed deep sadness over the deaths of two people after a boat capsized off the coast of Venezuela April 22 while heading towards Trinidad and Tobago.
At least 24 people were on board, according to local authorities.  While commercial Venezuelan vessels rescued seven people, operations are ongoing to find survivors among the 15 others who remain unaccounted for. ....
