The Sound of Silence. It could be the theme song of the Utah Democratic Party.
When Republicans, such as U.S. Reps. Chris Stewart or Burgess Owens, paint the Dems as socialists, or smack them with other derogatory labels, there often is no response or pushback just a very disturbing quiet.
There is no one like Jim Dabakis (the now-retired state senator from Salt Lake City) or Randy Horiuchi (the late Salt Lake County Councilman) to blast back at the GOP as cheap-shot artists whose talent for name-calling often seems to dwarf their other skills. And so, the effective Republican bumper-sticker sloganeering continues to eat its way through the Utah body politic. ....

It s a law meant to reduce the number of people behind bars in favor of substance abuse and mental health treatment. 
Eric Hutchings, now retired from legislative career served in the Utah House of Representatives since 2001, and likens the law to a baby that’s not fully developed, but it’s looking encouraging. Some, however, say it s creating more crime and putting  Utahns at risk.
“We’re not just gonna tolerate it until well you know what we’re sick of you, you’re going back to prison and the answer for everything is go to prison, the solution for everything is go to prison if you’re schizophrenic just go to prison and you’ll be fine, Hutchings said.  ....

Mention the supermajority at the Utah Legislature and most will assume you’re referring to the overwhelming dominance of Republicans.
But there’s an even more lopsided supermajority, one that some say wields even more influence than the GOP though often in a more under-the-radar way.
Eighty-nine of the 103 lawmakers to be seated Jan. 19 (with one current vacancy) are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. That’s 86%. Utah’s population is 60% Latter-day Saint, according to research by The Salt Lake Tribune. Latter-day Saints also hold 100% of the state’s congressional seats and statewide political offices, such as governor. ....
