A wide range of public health leaders, elected representatives, children’s health experts, grocery industry executives, and other advocates from the Nourish Rhode Island Coalition gathered at the Rhode Island State House on Tuesday to voice their support for proposed bills that would improve children’s health and alleviate hunger in Rhode Island through a “sugary drinks tax.”
The legislation is opposed by the national beverage industry.

PROVIDENCE  From housing to mental health, COVID-19 has hurt Rhode Island’s youngest and most vulnerable population.
In some cases, when numbers appear to be trending in a positive direction, it’s because families weren’t getting the services they sorely need.     
These were among the compendium of data on the health of children in Rhode Island, compiled every spring by Rhode Island’s Kids Count, a nonprofit child advocacy that belongs to a national network.  
The Kids Count 27th Factbook will be released Monday at the annual breakfast, from 9- 10:30 a.m. via Zoom. The 2021 factbook charts improvements and declines in the well-being of Rhode Island’s 203,575 children.    ....

RHODE ISLAND KIDS COUNT released Monday its annual Factbook, which found that the COVID-19 pandemic had devastating impacts on children and families economic outlook.
PROVIDENCE – The COVID-19 pandemic has had “devastating” impacts on children and families’ economic well-being, physical and mental health, safety, access to education and educational outcomes, according to Rhode Island KIDS COUNT’s 2021 Factbook, released Monday.
Furthermore, the report stated that employment loss that was caused by the pandemic is expected to impact economic mobility within low-income households, having devastating long-lasting effects on children in poverty – especially in Black and Hispanic households.
This year’s Factbook, which analyzes improvements and declines in the well-being of the Ocean State’s 203,575 children, looked at indicators that are grouped into five interrelated categories – family and community, economic well-being, health, safety, and education. ....
