A reader asked, âWhy was John the Baptist called a voice in the wilderness?â John was a voice in the wilderness of sin. He was devoted to his mission to serve God and lived an austere life. Before addressing Johnâs mission and his relationship with Jesus, two Old Testament passages need to be read. Isaiah, the prophet, wrote in 40:3,5, âA voice of one calling: âIn the wilderness prepare the way for the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. And the glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all people will see it together.ââ Malachi, the last book in the Old Testament, spoke about the future in 4:2-6, âBut for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its rays. Then you will trample on the wicked; they will be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day when I act,â says the Lord Almighty. âRemember the law of Moses. I will send the prophet Elijah to you before that great and dreadful day of the Lord comes.â During the 400 years between the Old and New Testament, prophetic voices were silenced.

Alerts Maggie (Lauren Cohen) discovers you can’t go home again, especially after the Whisperers burned it down. Image: Eli Ade/AMC In 2020, The Walking Dead had two pandemics to deal with. The first, of course, was the zombie virus, which has proven to be such a pesky problem for the survivors and ex-survivors of the show over the past decade. Then there was covid-19, which the show’s cast and crew have been trying to navigate since last spring while making six “bonus” episodes for season 10. If tonight’s return is any indication, they had mixed success at best.
The 17th episode of season 10 of The Walking Dead doesn’t play coy with the purpose of its existence. Right from the start, the first thing we see is Maggie Rhee, headed back toward Hilltop, the place she ran for a number of years, accompanied by Judith Grimes. Maggie’s return dictates not just the arc of this episode, but sets up what looks to be the next major threat to our heroes and potentially the last true villains they’ll face, given how close we are to the final season and the end of the series. Yes, to the list of nicknamed menaces like the Wolves, the Saviors, and the Whisperers, we can add one more group of still-breathing antagonists: the Reapers. Maybe Maggie’s homecoming wasn’t such a welcome one, after all.
