REDONDO BEACH  “Stand Up, Stand Together” was the theme of a rally held at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center in support of the AAPI community.

The April 11 event was organized by Brianna Egan, an MPH nutrition student at Loma Linda University who is working on a project to start a community garden in Redondo Beach; and Jerome Chang, an architect and business owner who recently ran for school board in Redondo Beach and is working to increase voter turnout and engagement for upcoming elections. ....

REDONDO BEACH “Stand up against anti-Asian hate, stand together in solidarity against racism and xenophobia” is the theme of a rally to be held Sunday, April 11, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center, 1935 Manhattan Beach Blvd.
Hate crimes and assaults targeting Asian Americans are on the rise over the past year, correlated with the COVID-19 pandemic. Anti-Asian hate crimes surged by 149% in 2020 in an analysis of hate crime data in 16 of the largest cities in the U.S. (CSU San Bernardino). Self-reporting tools from various AAPI organizations have recorded over 4,000 incidents since February 2020. ....

When newly elected Congressman Steve Kuykendall arrived in Washington, D.C. in January 1999, the Palos Verdes Republican made a point of visiting Tom DeLay as soon as possible. DeLay, a Republican from the Houston area then entering his eighth term in the House of Representatives, had served as the majority whip since 1995. In a legislature, the whip is responsible for ensuring that party members fall in line for upcoming votes. For those on the fence, DeLay would threaten to support primary challenges in an upcoming election, or to cripple a representative’s fundraising with unfavorable calls to influential donors.
