Post-COVID digital economy must include persons with disabilities
Advances in the digital economy, significantly accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, are creating unprecedented opportunities to build a more inclusive world of work for the more than 1 billion people with disabilities globally, a new report from the International Labour Organization (ILO) says.
However, digital barriers also threaten to aggravate existing inequalities and exclusion, unless they are countered with effective and targeted initiatives, as highlighted by the study.
The report, An inclusive digital economy for people with disabilities, was prepared by the ILO Global Business and Disability Network (GBDN) and the Spanish disability NGO Fundación ONCE. It looks at the effects of the digital revolution on the creation of new jobs, changes to existing roles and work models, as well as online recruitment processes. It also highlights key areas for action by different groups of stake ....

USC degree takes doctor from clinic to classroom
A medical doctor and clinical researcher of 10 years who treated children with polio in rural India and Nigeria has become a Sunshine Coast high school teacher, encouraging more teenagers – particularly women – into maths and science professions.
Dr Ashwita Venkatesh, who graduated from USC in mid-2020 with a postgraduate degree in secondary teaching, is settling into first term with her students at St Andrew’s Anglican College.
“My job involves teaching maths and science to secondary students, and I love my role as a mentor and role model,” said the Peregian Springs resident. ....

Imperial funds 17 new equality, diversity and inclusion projects
New equality, diversity and inclusion projects have been funded to highlight diverse voices and encourage open conversations and collective learning.
Eleven creative and exciting projects have been awarded funding in the second year of the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Seed Fund. An additional six projects have been funded through the Strategic Priorities Fund and the Vice-Provost of Education and Student Experience.
Professor Stephen Curry, Imperial’s Assistant Provost for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion said: “I’m delighted that despite COVID-19 we received so many fantastic applications for the EDI Seed Fund. The projects will highlight diverse staff and student voices, empower different groups to share their experiences and support open and honest conversations and learning from each other across the College.” ....

More than 30 organisations have written an open letter to the Prime Minister and state and territory leaders urging them to futureproof Australian housing through mandatory accessibility standards as part of the national construction code.
