Court bid to oust defamation barrister Sue Chrysanthou from Porter case

An order is being sought to restrain Sydney barrister Sue Chrysanthou, SC, who is acting on behalf of rape-accused Industry, Science and Technology Minister Christian Porter in his defamation case against the ABC, reports the Sydney Morning herald.
Adelaide Writers Week director Jo Dyer, the friend of the Adelaide woman who accused the former attorney-general of rape, was a debater with the woman in the late 80s. She has filed an urgent application in the Federal Court to restrain Ms Chrysanthou from representing her client on the basis that she had previously advised Ms Dyer on a separate matter. ....

The 44th annual writers' week festival celebrates achievements in literature

The Writers Week Festival event is an annual literary event that features readings from many different published authors. Entering its 44th year, the festival is the longest-running free literary event in California, and every event is open to the public. This year, the event was held via Crowdcast from Feb. 16 to 19.
Using an online platform resulted in the event being a little different from usual. Through most of the sessions, writers submitted prerecorded readings of excerpts from their novels or a few original poems. For example, during the 1 p.m. session on Feb. 17, Shin Yu Pi read from her latest poetry book, “Enso.” Furthermore, during the 6:30 p.m. session on Feb. 18, John Jennings shared his screen and showed a brief preview of his graphic novel, “After the Rain.” The recorded excerpts differed in content just as did they in execution; for example, although Session 2, which took place on ....

UC Riverside's 44th-annual Writers Week goes virtual

In 1993, Rita Dove was appointed Poet Laureate of the United States and Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress, making her the youngest person – and the first African-American – to receive this highest official honor in American Poetry. She served 1993-1995. In 1999 she was reappointed Special Consultant in Poetry for 1999/2000, The Library of Congress Bicentennial year. From 2004-2006, she served as Poet Laureate of the Commonwealth of Virginia. She is a Pulitzer Prize winner for “Thomas and Beulah” (1987), author of numerous poetry books, a novel, short stories, a play, and is editor of “The Penguin Anthology of Twentieth-Century American Poetry.”  Her honors include the 1996 National Humanities Medal from President Clinton and the 2011 National Medal of Arts from President Obama the only poet ever to receive both medals as well as the Heinz Award in the Arts and Humanities, the Wallace Stevens Award from the Academy of Americ ....
