RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) It s back to school for many families in Wake County this week. Now, some students could be headed for summer school if a new bill passes through the General Assembly. The Summer Learning Choice for Families , also known as House Bill 82, would require school districts to offer six weeks of learning recovery and enrichment after the school year ends. The bill aims to mitigate the impacts of COVID-19 on at-risk students and to require the implementation of innovative benchmark assessments. For students in kindergarten through third-grade, in-person instruction will focus on reading and math. There will be more focused science instruction for third-grade students. Students in fourth through eighth grade, in-person instruction will focus on reading, math and science as well as at least one enrichment activity. ....

Mike Dunphy named first athletic director at the new Willow Spring High School Tags: Updated February 19, 2021 4:48 p.m. EST By Nick Stevens, HighSchoolOT managing editor Willow Spring, N.C. Mike Dunphy will be the first athletic director at Willow Spring High School when it opens its doors to students this fall. The longtime Cary High School athletic director will open the school and serve as a science teacher. Willow Spring is the newest high school in Wake County, located in the southeastern part of the county. John Williams, the interim principal at Willow Spring, called Dunphy a champion. Dunphy was named the 2017 N.C. Soccer Coaches Association Athletic Director of the Year, and was named the HighSchoolOT Honors Athletic Director of the Year in 2020. As a coach, he has led teams and athletes to championships in soccer, basketball, badminton, and track & field. ....

CARY, N.C. (WTVD) In a 7-2 vote, the Wake County Public School System Board of Education voted Thursday to move to keep students in remote-only classes until mid-February. Board members made the decision after hearing passionate cries from employees and school administrators that shared their concern over the increasing positive COVID-19 cases as well as student grades. Staffing continues to be an issue as the school board system looks to hire more substitute teachers. The motion was opposed by board members Roxie Cash and Karen Carter who fought tirelessly to have students and staff back in the classroom. Carter questioned the efficacy of a survey issued to teachers and elementary school principals. ....
