THE UNITED STATES yesterday demanded swift action from the UN Security Council on Myanmar amid a push for a resolution to pressure the military junta to restore democracy.
“The military needs to feel the cost associated with its horrific actions. The stability and prosperity of the region depends on swift action,” US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield told a Security Council meeting. ....

Myanmar s junta said yesterday that a protest campaign against its rule was dwindling since people wanted peace, and that it would hold elections within two years, the first timeframe it has given for a return to democracy since its February 1 coup.
Troops fired rifle grenades at anti-coup protesters yesterday in the town of Bago, near the main city Yangon, witnesses and news reports said. At least 10 people were killed and their bodies piled up in the corner of a pagoda, they said. ....

UN Security Council Fails To Agree on a Joint Statement Condemning the Myanmar Coup

The UN Security Council disagreed on a joint statement condemning the coup in Myanmar but said talks would continue.
The 15-member council considered a UK-drafted statement wherein the envoy of the UN Security Council to Myanmar said that the country should collectively send a strong signal in favor of democracy.
The virtual meeting followed Aung San Suu Kyi s arrest and other top politicians by the military in a series of early morning raids on Monday. Armed Forces Leader Min Aung Hlaing took control after. 
The army stated that its coup was legitimate and was vowed to hold new elections. Arguing with the poll last November was illegitimate without evidence. For one year, a state of emergency will remain in effect, they added.  ....
