New Air Force One jets may be a year late, cost more, Pentagon official says

A top Pentagon official on Tuesday said that the new Air Force One jets being developed by Boeing may come a year later than initially expected and cost taxpayers additional money.
Acting Assistant Air Force Secretary Darlene Costello told lawmakers during a House Armed Services seapower and projection forces subcommittee hearing that, based on information from Boeing, the new jets that were scheduled to be completed by 2024 under a $3.9 billion deal will not be ready until 2025.
“Boeing has informed us that they believe it will be a 12-month [delay] beyond their original schedule. That doesn’t mean that we agree with that yet,” Costello said, adding that the Air Force is conducting a “schedule risk assessment.” ....

Based on final recommendations submitted by the DoD China Task Force, Secretary Austin issued a directive today initiating several major Department-wide efforts to better address the security challenges posed by China as the United States’ number one pacing challenge.
These initiatives some of which will remain classified are designed to focus Departmental processes and procedures and better help department leaders contribute to whole-of-government efforts to address the challenge from China.
They were developed in consultation and coordination with our interagency partners and will complement the multi-faceted work on China policy of departments, agencies, and the White House. ....

Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin III will devote more of his time to ensuring that the Pentagon refocuses its efforts on countering China, a senior defense official announced June 9.
The secretary’s personal focus on China is one result of the DoD China Task Force, which was ordered by President Joe Biden in February. Military leaders have said they view China as a pacing threat.
The task force has wrapped up its assessment and has issued a directive, which is classified, said the senior official, who briefed reporters on condition of anonymity. ....
