Crow Wing’s active COVID-19 cases fall below 100
Cuyuna Regional Medical Center will once again allow visitors at its Care Center, and Riverwood Healthcare Center in Aitkin began distributing vaccine to seniors.

Crow Wing County has fewer than 100 active cases of COVID-19 for the first time in more than four months.
As of Monday, Feb. 1, there were 85 known active cases of the disease caused by the coronavirus among county residents, according to statistics provided by county officials. That number dropped further Tuesday to 78, meaning of the 4,958 COVID-19 cases recorded thus far, 4,886 are believed to be out of isolation. ....

COVID-19 vaccination begins at Riverwood Healthcare facility

On Dec. 18, Riverwood Healthcare Center received its first shipment of 100 doses of the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine. Per federal guidelines, Riverwood is offering the vaccine initially to its frontline healthcare workers.
âWe are happy to begin distributing the vaccine to our staff,â said Dr. David Taylor, chief medical officer. âThe side effects are minimal for most people. I received my vaccine shot on Dec. 18 and had a sore shoulder for 24 hours, felt a little fatigued the next day, but then felt fine. After the first shot, the vaccine is 50% effective in preventing COVID-19 and 95% effective within about a week after the second shot. So, it takes a little over a month to get full immunity from the vaccine.â Taylor added: âOur next shipment of vaccine, scheduled to arrive the last week in December, will include 55 doses that we will continue administering to those who have direct patient care duties or exposure. COVID-19 vaccines arrive, first batch now administered

Riverwood Healthcare was among the stateâs frontline health care hospitals to receive the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine, getting 100 doses Dec. 18.
Per federal guidelines, Riverwood is offering the vaccine initially to its frontline health care workers. The next shipment of the vaccine is expected the last week of December with another 55 doses.
The priority for the vaccines is staff at Riverwood with direct patient-care duties or exposure.
âWe look forward to the vaccine becoming widely available to all who want it in the months ahead,â said Dr. David Taylor, Riverwoodâs chief medical officer.
Aitkin County Public Health will receive their first shipment containing 100 doses of the Moderna vaccine soon. Like Riverwood Healthcare Center, public health has been given direction on which groups to prioritize for initial vaccine allocations. ....

Aitkin schools will send students back two weeks early

The Aitkin School Board decided at its regular meeting Dec. 21 that students in grades 4-12 would return to school Jan. 5.
The vote was 4-2, with Noel Bailey not at that part of the meeting. The two dissenting votes were John Chute and Cindi Hills.
Aitkin Schools grades 4-12 have been in distance learning since Nov. 16 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with grades preK-3 still at Rippleside Elementary in person.
The discussion at the Dec. 21 meeting started with Superinteindent Dan Stifter saying the district would likely be able to return earlier than the original Jan. 18 estimate.
Stifter initially pitched the idea of students in grades 4-12 returning on Jan. 11. While final details on the state of Minnesota âreturn to schoolâ order set for Jan. 18 are up in the air, Stifter said schools can return sooner if they present a plan to the state. ....
