An expedition to map the seafloors of the Earth’s five oceans has provided new insights into their precise depths and locations, scientists say.
The Five Deeps Expedition explored the “key locations where the seafloor bottoms out” in the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Arctic and Southern Oceans in order to provide “the most precise information yet” on the oceans’ deepest points, reports the BBC.

According to a newly published paper in the Geoscience Data Journal, the Five Deeps Expedition mapped 550,000 sq km (212,356 sq miles) of seafloor, “of which 61% comprised new coverage over areas never before surveyed”. ....

Deepest points of the world's oceans revealed

Following one of the most adventurous ocean expeditions ever, scientists have returned precise measurements for the deepest points in each of the world s five major oceans.
Data from the Five Deeps Expedition (FDE), which performed dives over the course of 10 months from 2018 to 2019, confirms for the first time the locations of the deepest points of Indian Ocean and the Southern Ocean.
The deepest point of the Indian Ocean is at 7,187 metres, within the Java Trench, just off the coast of Indonesia, the data reveals, while the deepest point of the Southern Ocean has a depth of 7,432 metres, within the South Sandwich Trench.  ....

Larry Connor preps for dive to depths of Mariana Trench

Cincinnati Enquirer
CINCINNATI  With only nine months left until he pilots a history making mission to space, real estate investor and philanthropist Larry Connor has another groundbreaking piece of exploration to take care of. He is scheduled to make two dives to the deepest part of the ocean at more than 35,000 feet.
Connor said he plans to explore both the Challenger Deep and the Sirena Deep in the Mariana Trench, located in the Pacific Ocean near Guam, he told the Cincinnati Enquirer, part of the USA TODAY Network.
The hadal zone, or the area of the ocean below 20,000 feet, is considered the last frontier of exploration on Earth. “Hadal exploration” is exploration at depths beneath 20,000 feet, or 6,000 meters.  ....
