The 750-mile Empire State Trail is now officially open.
The long-planned recreational trail opened on New Year s Eve and is available for use by cyclists, hikers, runners, cross-country skiiers and more.
It runs from New York City through the Hudson and Champlain Valleys to Canada and from Albany to Buffalo along the Erie Canal.
The trail includes four gateways in Western New York: Buffalo Harbor State Park; the western entrance to the Erie Canal in Tonawanda, Five Locks Park in Lockport and Genesee Valley Park in Rochester.
The plan for the trail was first introduced in Gov. Andrew Cuomo s 2017 State of the State address. ....
