Master of the Rolls to create 'online funnel' for civil claims

By Jemma Slingo2021-01-28T11:59:00+00:00
The new master of the rolls is to commence a ‘fundamental generational reform of the civil justice system’, in which all claims will begin online before entering a digital court process.
Speaking at a virtual event hosted by the Law Society, Sir Geoffrey Vos said future generations ‘will not accept a slow, paper-based and courthouse-centric justice system. If that’s all that’s available, new generations will look for other means of dispute resolution. And it’s for that reason that the use of technology by the courts is not an option – it’s inevitable and essential .  ....

Back to tradition as master of the rolls appointed to Lords

By Michael Cross2020-12-23T09:45:00+00:00
The government has restored the century-old tradition of appointing retiring masters of the rolls to the House of Lords by including Sir Terence Etherton in the 2020 political peerages list. Sir Terence, who steps down as the head of civil justice in England and Wales at the end of this year, will sit as a cross-bencher.
Serving judges have not been entitled to sit in the lords following the abolition of the law lords in 2009. Sir Terence s predecessor, Lord Dyson, was not granted a peerage on his retirement in 2016 - a disappointment made public in his autobiography published last year. His title is a courtesy one granted for life to all Supreme Court justices. ....

Boris Johnson has nominated businessman Peter Cruddas for a peerage, despite his rejection by the honours watchdog.
The Lords Appointments Commission did not support ennobling the businessman, who quit as Tory co-treasurer in 2012 following cash-for-access allegations.
Mr Cruddas later won a libel case against a newspaper over its claims.
Mr Johnson rejected the commission s recommendation, becoming the first PM to ignore its advice on a nomination since it was set up in 2000.
Labour accused Mr Johnson - who received £50,000 from Mr Cruddas for his campaign to become Conservative leader in 2019 - of cronyism . ....

PM rejects official advice in awarding peerage to Peter Cruddas

Last modified on Tue 22 Dec 2020 23.37 EST
Boris Johnson has been accused of cronyism after he gave a peerage to a former Conservative party co-treasurer in defiance of advice from the Lords Appointments Commission.
Peter Cruddas, a businessman, philanthropist and Tory donor, was one of 16 people on a list of newly created political peerages – seven Conservative, five Labour, and four crossbench.
In a highly unusual move, Downing Street published the list alongside an open letter from Johnson to Paul Bew, the chair of the commission, explaining why he was putting Cruddas in the upper house without its approval.
Cruddas resigned as Conservative co-treasurer in 2012 after the Sunday Times claimed he was offering access to the prime minister for up to £250,000. A year later Cruddas won £180,000 in damages in a libel action, although that was subsequently reduced to £50,000 after aspects of the original allegations were upheld when the paper appealed. ....
