URBANA, Illinois, Jan 21 2021 (IPS) - On the first day, hours after inauguration of the new Biden-Harris administration, President Biden signed an Executive Order-rejoining the United States in the Paris Climate Accord.
President Joe Biden is also expected to roll out an ambitious climate change agenda and initiatives to mitigate the crisis, shrink the nations carbon emissions, convene a U.S. climate summit, and give voices to vulnerable communities impacted by climate change. He has already unveiled a very competent climate change team and appointed John Kerry as the special climate change envoy. ....

World-renowned environmentalist Dr. Bill McKibben gave his outlook for climate change in a Stony Brook University sponsored colloquium on Jan. 6.
Hosted by the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science, the School of Journalism and the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS), the chat sought to create a meaningful conversation about climate change. A recent report from the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service found that 2020 tied with 2016 for the hottest year on record.
An accomplished author and journalist, McKibben founded the climate activist group, 350.org. He is also a winner of the Gandhi Peace Award and Right Livelihood Award. ....

2020 ranks among the hottest years on record, several science agencies said today. NASA said that 2020 shares the top spot with 2016, following a similar determination by the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service last week. The World Meteorological Association (WMO), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and UK Met Office all released figures putting 2020 within the top three warmest years recorded.
They all agree that 2020 continued a trend of climbing temperatures, which is changing what’s considered “normal” on our planet. The warmest six years in recorded history have all taken place since 2015. We just climbed out of the hottest decade on record, and it already looks like the decade ahead will get hotter. ....
