European Shares Set To Extend Losses As Inflation Worries Persist
BRUSSELS/FRANKFURT/PARIS (dpa-AFX) - European stocks look set to extend losses on Wednesday as investors await inflation report and government debt sales in the U.S. as well as a scheduled speech by Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey for directional cues.
The U.S. CPI report due later in the day is forecast to show prices continued to increase in April.
The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield jumped to more than a one-week high, helping lift the dollar and weighing on gold.
Oil traded flat after rising overnight as OPEC stuck to its prediction of a strong recovery in world oil demand in 2021. ....

European Shares Rise After Earnings Beat
BRUSSELS/FRANKFURT/PARIS (dpa-AFX) - European stocks were mostly higher on Wednesday, with encouraging earnings and hopes for a strong economic recovery offering some support.
Caution prevailed as investors awaited U.S. inflation data due later in the day for clues on monetary policy going forward.
The pan European Stoxx 600 inched up 0.3 percent to 437.89 after tumbling 2 percent on Tuesday.
The German DAX edged up 0.1 percent and France s CAC 40 index was marginally higher while the U.K. s FTSE 100 was up 0.7 percent after the release of GDP figures.
U.K. gross domestic product shrank 1.5 percent sequentially in the first quarter, reversing a 1.3 percent rise in the fourth quarter, the Office for National Statistics reported. Economists had forecast a sequential drop of 1.6 percent. ....

Brussels Amazon won its bid to topple a €250m tax bill in another blow to European Commissioner Margrethe Vestager’s crackdown on preferential fiscal deals.
Regulators failed to show that the US online retailer was given special treatment by Luxembourg’s tax authority in violation of state-aid rules, the EU general court ruled on Wednesday. Amazon’s victory follows last year’s landmark court defeat for the EU commissioner against Apple, which contested a record €13bn tax order. ....

European Stocks Steady But Inflation Fears Haunt Wall Street

European stock markets steadied Wednesday after the previous session s slump thanks to upbeat regional growth data, but Wall Street dipped again on growing inflation fears.
A bigger-than-expected hike of 4.2 percent in consumer prices in April saw the Dow Jones index give up 1.3 percent two hours into trading amid fears of an about-face in Federal Reserve policy, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq lost 2.5 percent.
The larger-than-expected spike in US inflation last month surprised Federal Reserve Vice Chair Richard Clarida, but he said the central bank is ready to act if needed to contain prices. ....
