€23,500 grant for work on Kildare pyramid tombs, vault and walled towns

County Kildare has received €23,000 for three projects under special grant schemes run by The Heritage Council.
Under the Community Heritage Grant Scheme, €18,500 has been allocated to community groups and not-for-profit organisations in Kildare. Follies Trust received €8,500 for the conservation of iron doors on two pyramid mausolea at Maudlins burial ground, Naas. Tea Lane Graveyard Committee was awarded €10,000 to carry out conservation works to the Grattan Family Vault Celbridge.
Meanwhile, under the Heritage Council’s Irish Walled Towns Network (IWTN), €5,000 is earmarked for interpretation initiatives, which will protect and preserve the history and heritage of Ireland’s walled towns. Kildare Town Heritage CLG has been allocated €3,500 for its project Interpretation for the three abbeys of Kildare.’ The aim of this project is to raise public awareness of the three great abbeys of Kildare. An interpretive panel will be installed ....

The 2021 James Ford lectures on Ireland, Empire and the Early Modern World were delivered online by Professor Jane Ohlmeyer, Trinity College Dublin. The Ford Lectures in British and Irish History were first delivered in 1896-7 under a bequest from James Ford. Since then they have been delivered annually by a distinguished historian in Oxford.

Navassa Island is a small, uninhabited island located between Haiti, Jamaica, and Cuba.  Originally acquired for its guano resources, today, Navassa is of no apparent use to the United States.  A review of the island’s history and geography suggests several possibilities for Navassa’s future and America’s own interests in this remote territory.
Situated near the southern end of the Windward Passage, uninhabited Navassa Island is two square miles of wind-beaten brush struggling to grow among limestone and long-dead coral.  Forty miles from Haiti, 85 from Jamaica, and 130 from Cuba, its waters can be reached by mariners with relative ease.  However, Navassa’s abrupt, sharp coral cliffs prevent easy access to its terrain.  Today, the only regular visitors are fisherman from Haiti’s southwest coast, who rarely make landfall.  Navassa is a harsh and unappealing place.  It is also American territory. ....
