Last week, all were talking about the arrival of the new Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa, who had earlier held the post of Economic Development Minister (2010–2014). The ruling party and the supporters celebrated his arrival and new post while the Opposition and their supporters started to shout from the tops of their roofs pointing out various ‘issues’ in connection with the appointment of the new Finance Minister. May 18 marked the 12th anniversary of the end of 26-year bloody communal war in Sri Lanka waged by successive Colombo governments against the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and more broadly the island’s Tamil minority.
Speaking in parliament on the day, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse glorified the armed forces for the “liberation of the country from terrorism.” He added: “We ended the [war] era,” displaced refugees were “settled into their villages” and “public representatives from the North and East today are living with dignity, freedom and enjoys the democracy.” ....

Sri Lanka will face its next major diplomatic hurdle in the coming weeks when it confronts a resolution against it at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) sessions in Geneva, a practise which has now become almost an annual ritual for successive governments in Colombo.
These resolutions arose in the aftermath of the conclusion of the Eelam war in May 2009. Following the end of the conflict, there were allegations that human rights were violated by both Sri Lankan troops and members of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) terrorist group. ....
