Washington State Public Four-Year Colleges Go Test Optional, Permanently
May 21, 6:18 a.m. Public four-year colleges in Washington State have gone test optional, permanently.
"The decision to move to permanent test-optional policies reaffirm our sector’s commitment to reduce barriers for students. Further, as we enter a period of post-COVID-19 recovery, we continue our commitment to learn from this historic challenge and embrace long-term changes that best serve our students and state," said a joint statement from the provosts or vice president of academic affairs of the eight universities.
They are Central Washington, Eastern Washington, Washington State and Western Washington Universities, Evergreen State College and the Universities of Washington at Bothell, Seattle and Tacoma.

ALBANY — Members of the University at Albany’s faculty senate are calling for their pension fund administrator to divest from fossil fuel companies, joining a growing list of campuses to do so.
“In passing this resolution calling upon TIAA to divest its fossil fuel holdings, the academic and professional faculty of UAlbany took a strong stand on behalf of environmental justice and sustainability,” said Ron Friedman, a UAlbany associate professor of psychology who helped push through the divestment resolution, which passed on Wednesday.

SUNY mandatory vaccination plan won't include SUNY employees

One SUNY student said if officials really want to reduce exposure on campuses by forcing students to get vaccinated, then all segments of the higher education community should be required to get a jab.
“I feel like that’s messed up … It’s not fair that they can choose not to get it," Madison Mack, a senior international relations major at Buffalo State, said of SUNY employees not be covered by the vaccination edict.
Extending the mandatory vaccine order for SUNY employees would run into unions representing those workers that have something college students don’t have: political might. SUNY last year enforced mandatory testing for students in certain cases, while, according to one SUNY document, such testing was “strongly recommended” per written understandings between SUNY and various unions representing employees at the college system.

The 2021 New York State Labor Power 100

AFT
Reopening schools has been one of the most contested issues of the COVID-19 era, and few have been happy with the pace – parent, teacher or student. One person who thought New York City has tackled it correctly is Randi Weingarten, the president of the American Federation of Teachers. Unlike some national labor figures, Weingarten remains influential among local education unions in New York, where she headed the United Federation of Teachers from 1998 to 2009.

As international president of the Transport Workers Union, John Samuelsen represents 150,000 transit workers, including 41,000 at the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, his former employer whose tracks stretch from New York City to Poughkeepsie and Montauk. After a $3.9 billion bailout in March 2020, the MTA is receiving another $6 billion in aid via the American Rescue Plan, sidestepping once again the looming jobs catastrophe caused by the pandemic’s obliteration of transit revenue.

Educators could reap early retirement benefits in new bill | News, Sports, Jobs

CNHI
ALBANY — The politically influential teachers union has put its clout behind legislation that would give early retirement incentives to educators for both public school districts and state and community colleges.
New York State United Teachers, a union with which the United University Professions for SUNY faculty members is affiliated, is hoping the legislation is approved by both the Assembly and Senate before the legislative session closes in just six weeks.
According to the bill authored by Assemblyman Thomas Abinanti, D-Westchester County, the incentive would be temporarily open to employees who are at least 55 years of age and have at least 25 years of service. Currently, 30 years of service are required for employees in these positions to retire without penalty.

Climate bill would tax carbon in New York

SHARE:
While the federal government and many states have been sluggish in taking definitive action against climate change, New York has offered a range of examples of what a state can do by itself. The Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, a landmark 2019 law, mandated that the state reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 85% by 2050 compared to 1990 levels. The Climate Action Council of experts established by the legislation is expected to work out all the details in a plan due by the end of 2022. And offshore wind and solar energy projects got a boost in the recently passed state budget.
None of these efforts, however, definitively answer a multibillion-dollar question: How is the state going to pay for all of that? With just two months to go until legislators adjourn for the summer, a political alliance of left-leaning environmentalists and community organizers called New York Renews is pushing the idea of a carbon tax to raise billions of dollars each year via legislation called the Climate and Community Investment Act. Unless this gets done, other efforts might be in vain, supporters say. “The CLCPA will be the emperor with no clothes unless we pass the CCIA,” said state Sen. Kevin Parker, a Democrat representing Brooklyn who chairs the Committee on Energy and Telecommunications and is sponsoring the bill. “Revenue pricing will be key.”
