Novel malaria vaccine candidate gives strong, lasting protection

Malaria parasite. Photo: SENSISEEDSTwo United States (U.S.) Phase 1 clinical trials of a novel candidate malaria vaccine have found that the regimen conferred unprecedented high levels of durable protection when volunteers were later exposed to disease-causing malaria parasites.
According to the study published, yesterday, in the journal Nature, by A. Mwakingwe-Omari et al and titled ‘Two chemo-attenuated PfSPZ malaria vaccines induce sterile hepatic immunity’, the vaccine combines live parasites with either of two widely used antimalarial drugs- an approach termed chemoprophylaxis vaccination.

The researchers said a Phase 2 clinical trial of the vaccine is now underway in Mali, a malaria-endemic country. If the approach proves successful there, chemoprophylaxis vaccination, or CVac, potentially could help reverse the stalled decline of global malaria. Currently, there is no vaccine in widespread use for the mosquito-transmitted disease.

The "Wuhan lab" lie and the political witch hunt against science

Over the past week, the US media and the Biden administration have sought to legitimize the conspiracy theory that the world’s leading scientists were engaged in a cover-up of the “Wuhan lab” origins of COVID-19.

Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells via JNK/c-JUN Pathway

Purpose: The deposition of hydroxyapatite (HAp) crystals plays an important role in the development of vascular calcification (VC). This study aimed to demonstrate the effects of nanosized HAp (nHAp) on vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) and VC progression.
Methods: Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to examine cellular uptake of nHAp. Cell viability was determined using CCK-8 assay kit. Mitochondrial impairment and reactive oxygen species were detected by TEM and fluorescence dye staining, respectively. Cell apoptosis was detected by Western blot analysis and Annexin V staining. Mouse model of VC was built via applying nHAp on the surface of abdominal aorta. Calcification was visualized by Alizarin red and von Kossa staining.

COLCORONA study shows that colchicine can reduce complications in certain COVID-19 patients

COLCORONA study shows that colchicine can reduce complications in certain COVID-19 patients
The Montreal Heart Institute (MHI) announces that the COLCORONA study results are published today in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine.
The article, which is entitled Colchicine for community-treated patients with COVID-19 (COLCORONA): a phase 3, randomized, double-blinded, adaptive, placebo-controlled, multicentre trial, concludes that, given the lack of oral therapies available to prevent COVID-19 complications among non-hospitalized patients and the observed benefit of colchicine in patients with a PCR-confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19, this anti-inflammatory drug could be considered as a treatment for those at risk of complications.
Given the current pandemic, while awaiting collective immunity through vaccination around the world, the need for treatments to prevent COVID-19 complications among patients who contract the disease remains. Our study showed that colchicine could be used to reduce the risk of complications for some patients with COVID-19."
