PASSER Marine's LNG Tank Insulation System Gets DNV

DNV has granted an Approval In Principle (AIP) to PASSER Marine for the development of a new LNG fuel tank insulation system.
The new concept is designed for prismatic ‘type B’ LNG tanks - which according to IMO rules require a partial secondary barrier - and includes a leakage detection system capable of safely managing and containing fuel leaks.
"The system we have developed is cost-effective and production-friendly,” said Svein Konradsen, COO of PASSER Marine AS. “The pandemic has been challenging for many companies and for the development of this particular design. The required testing has been difficult to finalize due to testing interruptions and limited possibilities to travel, but finally we have been able to submit the necessary documentation which I am very pleased to say was accepted by DNV.”

Tanker Operator BAR and Cargill - yacht technologies for wind powered tankers

BAR Technologies has a project together with Cargill to bring wind propulsion technology to tankers, building on work done for yacht racing.
BAR Technologies of Portsmouth, UK, has partnered with global food corporation and tanker operator Cargill, and naval architecture firm Deltamarin of Helsinki, Finland, to bring “cutting edge wind propulsion technology” to tankers.

Cargill plans to install a bespoke wind propulsion technology, named “WindWings” by BAR Technologies, on a run of medium range (MR) product tankers by the end of 2022, followed by installations on dry bulk vessels the following year.

Wind power on merchant vessels has been increasingly discussed in recent years as the shipping sector looks to decarbonise, but so far, there has been no breakthrough solution. But before you turn to the next article, consider that the BAR in BAR Technologies stands for Ben Ainslie Racing.

Yara to offer wind-assisted propulsion solutions
Yara Marine Technologies
to design and implement wind-assisted propulsion for the shipping industry.
Under the agreement, Yara Marine will offer WindWings in its portfolio to ship owners and manage the value chain of procurement, construction, installation, service, and training.
This will include WindWings for the first commercial retrofit to a Cargill vessel, expected for delivery in 2022.
BAR Tech will retain the obligation to continue to innovate and establish additional WindWings offerings.

The Korean Register (KR) has awarded Approval In Principle (AIP) for a liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier with a prismatic IMO type-B tank built by Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD). The ship is a small to medium-sized LNG carrier with a B-type cargo tank developed as a result of a technical collaboration project between KR and HMD, which began in February 2020.

KR grants AIP to HMD for 30,000m3 LNG carrier with prismatic IMO type-B tank
The Korean Register (KR) has awarded Approval In Principle (AIP) for an LNG carrier with a prismatic IMO type-B tank built by Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD). The ship is a small to medium-sized LNG carrier with a B-type cargo tank developed as a result of a technical collaboration project between KR and HMD, which began in February 2020.
The type-B tank is usually applied to the fuel tanks of large sized container ships or bulk carriers but HMD has developed the technology to apply it to small and medium-sized LNG carriers of 30,000 m³ capacity. KR has carried out the cargo hold fatigue analysis, the crack propagation analysis and gas leakage rate calculation and has verified the new LNG carrier’s compliance with the IGC Code (the International Code for the Construction and Equipment of Ships carrying Liquefied Gases in Bulk).
