Pamplin Media Group - Letters: Two-party system is too rigid for unaffiliated

February 10 2021
Our readers also believe Portland is ill but not dying, that the Oregon Cares Fund is a necessary lifeline, and more.
In George Washington s farewell address, he warned of the dangers of political parties and their dangers of partisanship even when current political parties were being formed by founding fathers John Adams and Benjamin Franklin. But even with Washington s warning, America pursued establishing the majority two party system we have today.
As an Oregon non-affiliated voter, it is basically impossible to run for political office with the requirement to collect a minimum of 1% of verified voters per district in the specified time allowed. Non-affiliated voters cannot vote during an Oregon primary election because they are closed, leaving them to only vote during the general elections, which only have approved party candidates. Was this what our founding fathers fought the revolution for? ....

Pamplin Media Group - Twenty years, good friends, fond memories; all while hitting deadlines

Twenty years, good friends, fond memories; all while hitting deadlines
February 10 2021
My View: More than anything, the people have made the Tribune what it is. We had a lot of people in January 2001, and a few of us remain.
Outside the walls of the original downtown Portland office and our fledgling staff, cynics questioned why somebody would start a newspaper in the year 2001 and especially in a city that already had an established newspaper, The Oregonian.
A lot of people believed that the Portland Tribune wouldn t make it to 2002.
While readers and media members welcomed the new, colorful, informative and entertaining Portland Tribune, many of them predicted doom; believe me, I heard it all, including from staffers at The Oregonian, although their opinions meant nothing. ....

Pamplin Media Group - Prominent left-wing, right-wing voices could end up in court

February 04 2021
After being accused by Andy Ngo of defamation, Gregory McKelvey indicated that he has no plans to apologize or retract his statements.
The war of words between prominent left- and right-wing voices could turn into another legal battle.
Lawyers for author Andy Ngo claim political consultant Gregory McKelvey made false and defamatory statements during the run-up to the publication of Ngo s first book, Unmasked, a less than flattering look at the local anti-fascists known as antifa.
McKelvey had panned Powell s Books for keeping Ngo s tome for sale online though the bookseller pledged not to stock physical copies on its shelves in response to protests with McKelvey writing in a Jan. 11 tweet that Ngo provided kill lists to Neo-Nazis, rioted with far-right activists at a local bar and consistently and purposely puts people s lives in danger. ....

Pamplin Media Group - Third Oregonian with new COVID-19 variant from Washington County

Vaccine manufacturers Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech have said their vaccines should be effective against the B.1.1.7 variant.
About 300 cases of the variant have been detected nationwide, according to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Two Oregonians who previously tested positive for the variant, a University of Portland staff member and a Yamhill County resident, didn t have a known travel history outside the country.
Public health officials say the emergence of the new variant of COVID-19 in Oregon is a reminder of the need to practice preventative safety measures.
This may be the (third) case detected, but it is likely the variant is already circulating much more widely throughout our county and the state, said Mary Sawyers, spokesperson for Washington County Public Health. This means people should assume that they may come in contact with a much more contagious variant of COVID-19 and they need to continue to wear masks, social ....

Pamplin Media Group - Democrats: Bipartisanship nice, results nicer

Democratic leaders on Monday said they hope for bipartisanship in the 2021 Oregon Legislature.
But, they said, they won t let that goal hinder their desire to pass laws they consider crucial.
During an online preview of the Oregon Legislature held by the City Club of Portland on Jan. 25, Sen. Majority Leader Rob Wagner, D-Lake Oswego, and House Majority Leader Barbara Smith Warner, D-Portland, said Democrats goals were forged by the pandemic, wildfires and the calls for racial justice in the wake of the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis
The agenda is transformation through crisis, Smith Warner said, citing 2020 s challenges. How do we learn from them and use them as an opportunity to really make meaningful change? ....
