Shoreline will take over Tomales preschool, but wait on Papermill Creek

The Shoreline Unified School District board voted last week to bring Shoreline Acres under its control starting this fall. The move is intended to align the Tomales preschool with the elementary school, boost staff retention by offering employees health insurance and allow for easier access to state funding. While trustees had some questions about the budget, they were ultimately in full support of the proposal, whose cost is covered by tuition, donations and state scholarships. 
“It’s been a goal of boards I’ve been sitting on for 20 years to have preschools under the roof of the Shoreline district,” trustee Tim Kehoe said.  ....

Tomales High School hires new principal

A former language development teacher for English learners at Tomales High is returning to the school as its principal. On July 1, John McGurke, the vice principal at Piner High School in Santa Rosa, will replace Adam Jennings, who was promoted to the district’s superintendent position. “Having been part of the community as a teacher, I really feel like I’m going back home,” Mr. McGurke, 52, said. Born and raised in Dallas, Mr. McGurke is the son of a cattle rancher and a school nurse. He holds a degree in post-secondary education from the University of San Francisco, and has spent 25 years in the education field, the last 14 of which have been at public comprehensive schools. He was a teacher, an athletic director and a soccer coach at Tomales High from 2013 to 2016, before moving to Piner. He also taught at Bishop High School in the eastern Sierras for six years. Interpretation services during school board meetings depend on the district and its unique community


Paso Robles community activist Yessenia Echevarria founded Paso People s Action and Mujeres de Acción (Women of Action) as a way to inform and support the Latino and Spanish-speaking residents in the city.
She worked with the city to get the word out about COVID-19 safety and used social media to spread the news about a high school ethnic studies course proposed by the Paso Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee. Echevarria said she s constantly in contact with the community to identify and address their needs through local partnerships.
A lot of her recent work has focused on rallying Latino and Spanish speakers to participate in school board meetings by speaking about their experiences during public comment in a language that they re comfortable with. ....
