New Alaska ferry plan will use federal aid to help dodge last-minute schedule cuts

Print article
JUNEAU Gov. Mike Dunleavy and state legislative leaders have agreed on a plan to fund Alaska’s ferry system in advance, preventing abrupt changes to ferry schedules if the system’s budget is cut in the future.
Under the plan, Alaska will use federal economic aid to fund the Alaska Marine Highway System for the next 18 months. After that period, the state’s ferries will use a January-through-December budget calendar.
That means any cuts to the ferry system’s budget during the spring legislative session won’t take effect for six months or more, allowing riders to change their plans well in advance. ....

Anti-Mask GOP State Senator Lora Reinbold Mocked for 19-Hour Road Trip After Airline Ban
On 4/26/21 at 8:39 PM EDT
Alaska Airlines banned GOP state senator Lora Reinbold from flying on Thursday after she refused to wear a mask above her nose, prompting her to complain about a lengthy road and ferry trip to the state capital to vote against an extension of COVID-19 pandemic rules.
On Thursday, Reinbold appeared in a video at Juneau International Airport, the state s capital city, challenging airport employees and at least one police officer after she refused to wear her mask above her nose. An Alaska Air employee could be heard telling the Eagle River lawmaker, We need you to pull the mask up or I m not going to let you on the flight. Reinbold was further mocked for the incident on Sunday after she posted a series of complaints and articles blasting the airlines, as well as science behind COVID-19 social distancing. ....

COVID-19 has had a major impact on Alaska’s economy. Tourism by cruise ship appears to be nonexistent for the 2021 season, and those businesses that cater to tourism face a troubled future. Visitors to South Franklin Street in Juneau, or along the boardwalks in Ketchikan and Skagway, are met with boarded-up windows and closed signs. The impact extends on to Anchorage, Kenai, Fairbanks and throughout our entire state. The loss of state revenue through sales tax, passenger head tax and loss of jobs across the board, especially those serving the visitor industry has been devastating, and we are seeing the engine of our summer economy slipping away with each day that passes. ....

In an effort to save money, the Alaska Marine Highway considers sinking one of its oldest ferries

2:28
In a  House Finance Committee meeting at the state capitol in Juneau, a Department of Transportation official suggested some cost-saving measures, including ridding the fleet of one of its unused vessels, the MV Malaspina.
It’s one of the fleet’s oldest ships, built in the 1960s, and it has been moored at Ward Cove in Ketchikan since 2019.  It costs about $450,000 annually just to store the ship.
The state is currently considering a variety of options to remove that red line from its budget.  They’ve looked into selling the ferry, but there’s an overabundance of decommissioned cruise ships available, so there’s very little interest in the open market. That leaves selling the boat for scrap metal or just sinking it.  ....
