When people think of sea level rise, they usually think of coastal erosion. However, recent computer modeling studies indicate that coastal wastewater infrastructure, which includes sewer lines and cesspools, is likely to flood with groundwater as sea-level rises.
A new study, published by University of Hawai i (UH) at Mānoa earth scientists, is the first to provide direct evidence that tidally-driven groundwater inundation of wastewater infrastructure is occurring today in urban Honolulu, Hawai i. The study shows that higher ocean water levels are leading to wastewater entering storm drains and the coastal ocean creating negative impacts to coastal water quality and ecological health. ....

Alaska is renowned for its postcard pretty mountains, vast spaces and massive earthquakes.
But not many people know the highest tsunami wave ever accurately measured - at 524-metres - occurred in Alaska.
It happened 63 years ago during a tsunami - an unusual wave that is usually generated by either a large undersea earthquake; volcanic eruptions; landslides that fall into the sea or that occur underwater; and asteroids.
Evidence of the destruction caused by the Lituya Bay, Alaska tsunami can still be seen from space. ....

Saint Helena Forum returns with webinar on restoring the world's oceans | News

One year after postponing its inaugural conference due to the pandemic, the Saint Helena Forum is returning in virtual form.
“Restoring Our Oceans in One Generation” is the topic of a free webinar on 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 24, featuring Alexandra Cousteau, president and co-founder of Oceans 2050 and daughter of famed explorer Jacques Cousteau, in conversation with Meaghan Brosnan, director of the WILDAID Marine Program.
The discussion, chaired by Forum President Doug Barr, will center on mitigating damage to the world’s oceans caused by pollution and overfishing.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Evolutionary arms races between marine animals overhauled ocean ecosystems on scales similar to the mass extinctions triggered by global disasters, a new study shows.
Scientists at Umeå University in Sweden and the Florida Museum of Natural History used paleontological databases to build a multilayered computer model of the history of marine life over the last 500 million years. Their analysis of the fossil record closely echoed a seminal 1981 study by paleontologist J. John Sepkoski - with one key difference. ....
