Payment For Order Flow & The Fleecing Of The Retail Investor – Investment Watch

third parties
Read that again.
For many years, paying for order flows allowed firms to centralize customers’ orders for another firm to execute. Such allowed smaller firms to use economies of scale of larger firms.
By allowing small firms to combine orders with larger firms, it provided better execution quality.
Over the years, the decimalization of the trading securities diminished the profitability of trade execution.
Such pushed Wall Street toward PFOF as a way to generate revenue and subsidize the move to zero-commissions.
The advances in technology and data analysis increased the speed with which information gets sent and received. Over the last decade, Wall Street spent billions to figure out ways to take advantage of the data and ....

You know, when Elizabeth Warren puts it that way.
Nothing is truly free. “Free shipping” just means the shipping costs have been factored into the price. “Free streaming service” just means you pay for it with your time watching commercials. Free toasters, free trips, free timeshares: You’re paying for all them somehow, because nothing is actually free.
Which brings us to the concept of free stock trades. Sure, you can log on to your Schwab or TD or Robinhood account and buy or sell a share commission-free, if in fact the service of your choice is able and willing to make the trade you’d like. And this may seem genuinely free, since rules and regulations of course require those platforms to conform with “best execution obligations,” one of which is getting a customer the ....

Some new light shed on GameStop frenzy

Some new light shed on GameStop frenzy
A congressional hearing held last Thursday into the GameStop share trading frenzy cast some light, albeit limited, on previously little reported but significant practices in the operations of Wall Street.
The inquiry by the House Financial Services Committee involved questioning of those associated with the GameStop market surge last month, which involved a “short squeeze” on hedge funds, most notably Melvin Capital, which had shorted the stock.
Shorting involves borrowing the shares of a company and then selling them with the aim of forcing down the price, whereupon the seller buys the shares at the lower price and returns them to the lender, making a profit on the transaction. ....

A Washington Beating for Robinhood's CEO | Chief Investment Officer

A Washington Beating for Robinhood’s CEO
The GameStop congressional hearings expose fractures in the online brokerage’s business model: its trading halt, margin level, and fee policy.
Seven years ago, online brokerage Robinhood promised to revolutionize the industry when it launched with a zero-commission trading model aiming to democratize investing for all. This was a standard that peers soon widely adopted.
But on Thursday, Robinhood took the heat. Its business management met sharp criticism from members of the House Financial Services Committee. They convened virtually for a high-profile hearing on last month’s massive market volatility involving GameStop, the video game seller, and several others. ....
