Canberra is blessed with amazing clouds and sunsets, but few of those hurrying Brack-like to and from work seem to appreciate their transient beauty, says columnist

I WORKED for a few years in deserts where clouds were nowhere to be seen and I missed them sorely – along with rain.

However, in 2018 I was fortunate to be in the Sahara in Morocco with the Tuareg people when storm clouds broke bringing flooding rains. Many of their sub-teen children had never seen rain. 
I had earlier naively asked why Tuareg wore dark clothing given that it absorbed the sun’s heat – the simple reason is they don’t have enough water for washing clothes and dark colours don’t show the dirt! ....

I’VE spent a lot of time either in or on water, particularly the ocean, so my interest in waves of the watery kind is perhaps not surprising.

Many Canberrans spend time on the coast or visit the south coast (when not being made unwelcome by covid fears), so I assume they would also be interested in waves.
People who fish from rock shelves should definitely take an interest in waves, if only for survival reasons. ....

IN a previous column I mentioned the Americanised habit of asking for the bathroom in order to avoid using that apparently offensive “t” word, “toilet”.

That got me wondering – why is the porcelain throne room referred to as the toilet? 
I found it’s French in origin, coming from “toilette”. Toilette is derived from another word “toile”, which means cloth. A cloth would be draped over the gentry in the morning while their hair was being groomed as they sat over a chamber pot doing their business. The word toilet came to be used for the room where that action took place.   ....
