Michigan professor fired after racist tweets, COVID-19 misinformation

A Michigan university professor has been fired after posting racist, anti-Semitic and homophobic comments on Twitter.
Ferris State University physical sciences professor Thomas Brennan announced his firing Saturday on Twitter, and the university confirmed to The Detroit News that Brennan was fired on Thursday.
A representative of the university could not immediately be reached for comment Sunday.
Brennan was placed on administrative leave in November 2020 for his comments, according to a message sent to the campus by Ferris State University President David L. Eisler sent on Nov. 23.
His posts included a racial slur about Neil deGrasse Tyson, a homophobic slur, COVID-19 denial, and comments about a Jewish mafia and COVID-19 being a (J)ewish revolution, according to a report from The Torch, the university s student newspaper. ....

Facebook oversight board could lift Donald Trump indefinite suspension

Facebook has handed off responsibility about whether to restore former President Donald Trump s access to his Facebook and Instagram accounts to its Oversight Board.
The decision to block Trump’s access following the attack on the U.S. Capitol was praised by Trump critics and had the support of most Americans but was condemned by free speech advocates who warned it set a dangerous precedent.
The Oversight Board accepted the case, saying the suspension has driven intense global interest.
Trump s accounts will remain frozen until the Oversight Board rules on whether to lift the suspension. The Oversight Board has 90 days to make a decision but a ruling is expected more quickly. Its decision is binding and cannot be overruled by CEO Mark Zuckerberg or any other Facebook executive. ....
