Shells made of structural glass are beautiful objects from both the aesthetics and the engineering point of view. However, they pose two significant challenges. The first one is to assure adequate safety and redundancy concerning possible global collapse. Being single-layered, in a shell made of structural glass, the brittle cracking of a single pane can lead to a sudden propagation of failure, up to instability.
The second one is to guarantee cheap replacing possibilities for potentially collapsed components. This research explores a novel concept to address both requirements, where glass is both post-tensioned and reinforced and develops the research on TVT post-tensioned glass beams. ....

Nearly six months of preliminary work regarding the static calculation of the load on the individual panes has been completed. This allows the construction to support itself with no screws in the substrate.
The project is unique, but the special features are not limited to the frameless glass structure itself. We have extended requirements for glass refiners, explored new possibilities for constructive glass construction, and developed new processes.
Each laminated safety glass pane consists of two 8-mm thick, semi-stressed individual panes made of low-iron white glass. They are connected by several foils of Saflex Structural. In addition, highprecision, stainless steel fittings are laminated between the two glass panes. ....

Abstract
In structural glass design, an often-applied connection is a bolted connection subjected to in-plane tensile loads. Traditionally, the hole in the glass pane is manufactured by core drilling and conical edge finishing. An alternative method is by waterjet cutting the holes, resulting in cylindrically shaped holes. This research compares the edge strength of core drilled and waterjet cut holes. It focuses on in-plane tensile tests and consists of an experimental part in combination with a numerical part. In the in-plane tensile tests, peak stresses occur perpendicular to the load direction. ....
