On May 5, President Joseph R. Biden Jr. issued a proclamation on the National Day of Prayer, which was to be observed on May 6. Speaking to people of all religious backgrounds and acknowledging his own prayer life, the president stated: “I invite the citizens of our Nation to give thanks, in accordance with their own faiths and consciences, for our many freedoms and blessings, and I join all people of faith in prayers for spiritual guidance, mercy, and protection.”
After a year marked by the Covid-19 pandemic and other experiences of loss, Mr. Biden suggested that “the determination to overcome adversity, rise above our differences, and come together as one nation to meet this moment in history” could be found in prayer. ....

At the beginning of the year, there was the uplifting news that a new podcast Bible in a Year (with Father Mike Schmitz) topped the Apple Podcast chart not just for religious or for Christian offerings but for every type of offering.
It was noteworthy for a few reasons.
The first is because the Bible, and a Catholic priest, had debuted at the top of the Apple Podcast charts, beating out formidable competition from the New York Times the Daily, Dateline NBC, Crime Junkie, and many other popular, well-established offerings. At a time when Christians in general are feeling marginalized and the world is trying to pronounce the Church irrelevant, it was a helpful reminder of the influence Catholics still can and do have. ....

WASHINGTON (CNS) Jesuit Father Hans Zollner, one of the Vatican’s top experts in the field of clergy sexual abuse, said during an interfaith symposium on the subject that working together will help eliminate sexual abuse in different faiths.
“I’ve seen that both faith leaders, and those who are involved as boots on the ground, are quite sensitive to the risks to youth and other vulnerable people,” said Father Zollner, president of the Center for Child Protection at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. ....
