Ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine are not proven Covid-19 treatments

Two videos shared hundreds of times on Facebook feature a Kenyan doctor alleging that two drugs ivermectin on its own and hydroxychloroquine in combination with zinc and azithromycin are effective in treating Covid-19. But the claims are false: there is no scientific evidence that either medication can help treat the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. 
In a video posted in English on March 17, 2021, Kenyan doctor Stephen Kimotho Karanja claims that two sets of medication can help treat Covid-19: the anti-parasite drug ivermectin on the one hand, and a mix of the anti-malaria medication hydroxychloroquine, with zinc and azithromycin on the other. ....

The Catholic bishops in Kenya have announced their support for vaccination efforts in the East African nation, saying it is lawful and ethically acceptable to receive all vaccines against COVID-19 that the Ministry of Health recognizes as clinically authentic, safe and effective .
Bishop Philip Anyolo, president of the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) read out a statement on March 9 that encouraged and praised the national government for working tirelessly to ensure that the most vulnerable Kenyans have access to the COVID-19 vaccine . ....

NAIROBI (Reuters) - Kenya began vaccinating people on Friday against COVID-19 with AstraZeneca shots hoped to help revive the battered tourism-dependent economy of East Africa’s richest nation.

“This may mark the beginning of the end of the pandemic,” said Susan Mochache, a senior official at the health ministry.
Nairobi received over a million AstraZeneca doses on Wednesday, the first of 3.56 million shots via the global, vaccine-sharing COVAX facility. Top of the list are 400,000 health staff and other essential workers. ....
