Both states have laws on the books aimed at protecting and managing forests, as well as sustainable forestry and palm oil certification schemes. Experts on forest management and conservation see cause for both optimism and skepticism.

"If there are residents taking refuge in temporary shelters, they are being provided with special tents equipped with rooms," Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan said during a webinar organized by the Indonesian Cyber Community Network here on Monday. He then urged Jakartans to continue practicing the government's health protocols, such as wearing face masks, washing hands, and maintaining physical distancing at all times.
