C’est l’une des plus vastes usines aéronautiques du nord-est de l’Amérique du Nord. Construite dans les années 1940, elle a d’abord été occupée par la Canadian Vickers, puis par Canadair. Depuis 1986, elle appartient à Bombardier.
Située dans l’arrondissement montréalais de Saint-Laurent, l’usine est névralgique pour Bombardier puisqu’elle fabrique des composants pour l’ensemble des appareils de l’avionneur. Mais avec le retrait de l’entreprise du secteur de l’aviation commerciale, les installations de deux millions de pieds carrés sont devenues trop grandes.
La production du poste de pilotage et de la pointe arrière du fuselage de l’ancienne C Series, aujourd’hui l’Airbus A220, est sur le point de quitter la vieille usine de Saint-Laurent pour être déplacée dans un bâtiment tout neuf en construction à Mirabel. Le même sort attend les éléments de structure des avions A330 que Bombardier fabriquait pour Airbus. ....

Last Friday, I paid a visit to my old digs, Hochelaga–Maisonneuve. I was taking part in a documentary about Gilles Duceppe, who also grew up in this much storied neighbourhood. In fact, we were neighbours. Gilles was older than me and never noticed me strutting down the lane we shared, a lane that linked Pie IX Blvd. to Jeanne-d’Arc Ave. But I noticed him.
I found him handsome, with his large blue eyes, tall with lots of hair. But my friend was his sister Monique.

Designated “PBY” PB for “Patrol Bomber” while the Y was the code assigned to Consolidated by the U.S. Navy, the twin-engine, parasol-mounted monoplane was equipped with a flying boat hull as well as retractable tricycle landing gear and retractable wing-tip floats. Originally designed as a patrol bomber thanks to its long operational range, it was intended to locate and attack enemy transport ships at sea. ....
