Georgia Grants Approval To Spaceport Camden, Clearing Path To License

It’s a milestone in Camden County’s quest towards a commercial spaceport that has been plagued by opposition from environmental groups and owners of property on Little Cumberland Island, which lies beneath the proposed rocket trajectories. More than 3,000 county residents have signed a petition to force a referendum on the project, which county officials have pushed as an economic development opportunity.
After nearly a decade since Camden first began contemplating a spaceport, the FAA is expected to decide this month whether to grant the county spaceport operator license. (All actual rocket launches would require additional licenses from the agency.) ....

Warnock Urges FAA Not To 'Cut Corners' On Spaceport Review

U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock of Georgia is pushing back on the nearly completed environmental review of the proposed spaceport in Camden County.
“This is not the time to cut corners on environmental review or cut out public participation in the evaluation of this project,” Warnock wrote to two top Federal Aviation Administration officials Monday.
After more than five years, the agency is scheduled to rule on the controversial rocket launch site proposed for Georgia’s coast in late June.
Warnock, a Democrat, is the first federal official from Georgia to publicly raise questions about the project.
In 2018, Georgia’s entire bipartisan House Congressional delegation and two Republican senators signed letters in support of the coastal Georgia county’s spaceport license application. ....

Unique Study of Isolated Bobcat Population Confirms Accuracy of Extinction Model

The reintroduction of 32 bobcats to an island off the coast of Georgia more than three decades ago created an ideal experiment to examine the accuracy of a genetic-modeling technique that predicts extinction of isolated wildlife populations. That’s the conclusion of Penn State researchers who continue to monitor the bobcat population on Cumberland Island National Seashore, and who conducted a study comparing and contrasting the Cumberland Island bobcats to a population of bobcats on Kiawah Island off the coast of South Carolina.
