Cambodian curfew lifted but Covid-19 cases continue to climb

PHNOM PENH, May 24 (dpa): Cambodian authorities further eased restrictions over the weekend but a Covid outbreak at the country’s most overcrowded prison provided cause for concern.
Cambodia’s Ministry of Health on Monday reported 556 new cases.
The tally comes after an 8 pm curfew in place since April was lifted by authorities in Phnom Penh. They also lifted a ban on alcohol sales. ....

Cambodia Marks First COVID-19 Death, One Year After Coronavirus Declared Pandemic

Cambodia’s Ministry of Health on Thursday confirmed the country’s first COVID-19-related death, one year to the day that the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the coronavirus that causes the disease a global pandemic.
The patient, 50, was a driver for a Chinese company chief who lived in Sihanoukville city, and who also had tested positive for COVID-19, according to a ministry statement. The driver died at a Phnom Penh hospital, the statement said, without providing further details.
The ministry also announced Thursday that it had confirmed 39 new cases that were transmitted locally, bringing the total number of such cases to more than 600. There has been a total of more than 1,000 COVID-19 positive patients in Cambodia, around half of whom have recovered. ....

Cambodia on alert as Covid-19 cases from Thailand creep up

PHNOM PENH, Jan 11 (dpa): Cambodian authorities remain on alert as Covid-19 cases from Thailand continue to climb among returning migrant workers.
Cambodia s Ministry of Health on Monday reported that 27 of the country’s 392 cases were linked to the outbreak in Thailand.
The most recent was identified as a woman who arrived home from the country s northern neighbour on Friday.
The woman is among at least 12,000 migrant workers that have returned to Cambodia since December 20, a Health Ministry spokesperson told local newspaper the Khmer Times on Monday. ....

The acting president of Cambodia’s opposition party, Sam Rainsy, on Thursday slammed the country’s government for soliciting donations to buy coronavirus vaccines as “populist” and “corrupt,” prompting the ruling party to label his comments a form of “incitement.”
In a statement posted to his Facebook account, Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) acting chief Sam Rainsy suggested Prime Minister Hun Sen’s government is “lagging behind” other Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) members in acquiring a sufficient number of vaccines.
He noted that several other countries have been able to arrange purchases of vaccines that they will provide to their citizens free of charge, while Hun Sen has had to request financial assistance from the public. ....
