In the weeks before she died of COVID-19 in the dementia unit of a suburban Philadelphia personal care home, Barbara Demech often lamented about the Alzheimer’s disease that began gripping her mind a decade earlier.
“She’d say to me, ‘I just feel like somebody is in there taking over,’” recalled her son, Mike Demech. “She would say it often toward the end.”

Like so many people in the throes of dementia, it was difficult for her and others in the “memory care” unit to take the most basic steps like wearing a mask or social distancing and prevent themselves from contracting the disease. ....

Fort Nelson to expand senior gardening program after funding boost

FORT NELSON, B.C – Gardening at Grace Manor is expanding after receiving grant funding from TD Bank.
The funding will be used to construct eight new, more accessible raised beds and purchase materials and supplies.
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Northern Rockies Recreation Centre created the program last year, initially as part of the rec centre’s “Plant that Seed” initiative.

Additionally, local high school teacher Dave Sutherland and the Fort Nelson Secondary School woodworking class agreed to donate their time and skill to construct the gardening beds.  This will increase accessibility and safety for the mainly senior population of Grace Manor, says the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality. ....
