As California’s impasse over reopening schools drags on, its disparities are becoming clearer. As Congress hammers out President Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion stimulus package, California has worked out its own plan to get more cash into the hands of struggling Californians, particularly undocumented families left out of federal assistance.
After weeks of public hearings and closed-door negotiations, California legislators voted Monday to pass $600 one-time payments to households receiving the state’s earned income tax credit, along with an extra $600 for undocumented taxpayers earning less than $75,000 who were ineligible for previous federal stimulus payments and other assistance for low-income residents.  ....

California Lawmakers Will Decide Whether Candidates For Sheriff Need Law Enforcement Background

California lawmakers will consider a proposal to allow candidates with no background in law enforcement to run for county sheriff. 
Under current law, candidates must be certified by the state Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training or have experience and education in law enforcement.
Senate Bill 271, which was introduced Thursday by Sen. Scott Wiener (D–San Francisco), would remove those eligibility requirements.
“They re often the most or one of the most powerful elected officials in the county … and almost no one can challenge them for reelection,” Wiener said. He added that often results in a “lack of accountability” for sheriff’s in office. ....
