COVID-19 vaccine rollout leaves out many workers

Millions of front-line workers in California are falling through the cracks of an undersupplied COVID-19 vaccine distribution system, putting entire communities at prolonged risk of illness and raising the question among workers: Who counts as “essential,” and who gets to decide?
The state’s front-line workforce includes 5.7 million people at heightened risk during the pandemic, according to the California Legislative Analyst’s Office. They package food, prune fields, clean offices and assemble cloth face masks, among other jobs.
Some have higher-paid roles in public health and public corrections. All are at risk of contracting the virus because they regularly interact with other people customers and colleagues as they keep services running and pantries stocked. ....

When it comes to avoiding future misfortune, people generally fall into one of three categories. The vast majority of people tend to learn from their own mistakes. They may have to make them more than once, but eventually, they learn. The truly fortunate are those who are able to learn from the mistakes of others, thereby saving themselves from all kinds of grief. The third (unfortunate) group consists of those who never learn from mistakes, theirs or anybody else s. These are the knuckleheads, the recidivists, the repeat offenders. And, if somebody doesn t do something to pull them out of their self-destructive tailspin, that third group is going to include whatever is left of the once-powerful Arizona Republican Party. ....

Apodaca: UC Irvine law professor sees college degrees as a way to reduce recidivism

Keramet Reiter has always had a passion for social justice, possibly inherited from her parents, who served in the Peace Corps in the 1960s.
It was as an undergraduate at Harvard that she found an outlet for that passion, when she volunteered to teach at a nearby prison. Nervous at first and uncertain how her incarcerated students would react to a young woman offering to help educate them, Reiter was pleased when her fears were not realized.
“People were incredibly respectful,” she said. “I was amazed by how engaged and interested my students were.”
That experience led to a lifelong commitment to advancing educational opportunities in prisons, a journey that has taken her from the East Coast to UC Berkeley, where she attended law school and earned a PhD in jurisprudence and social policy. ....

San Diegans Observe National Day of Protest to Stop Police Brutality |

Family members who have lost loved ones at the hands of police along with a number of community leaders and supporters were out in full force to call attention on police shootings at several events held in the region as part of a National Day of Protest to Stop Police Brutality.
At one of the observances,Bri Rivera once again demanded justice for her uncle, Raul Rivera, who suffered from mental illness, after he was fatally shot by police in the South San Diego neighborhood of Nestor in May of this year. ....
