UC Davis resists calls to condemn 'extremist' anti-Israel statement  – J.


Faced with legal questions surrounding a staunchly pro-Palestinian statement endorsed by a cross-section of academic departments in May, UC Davis is dismissing demands to remove or condemn it.
Last week 58 pro-Israel faculty members at the university made public what had been an internal back-and-forth with administrators since late May. The group, known as Davis Faculty for Israel, released a July 19 letter sent to a university lawyer outlining concerns over what DFI’s chair called “extremist anti-Israel propaganda” published on a university website.
The controversy began on May 27, when the six-paragraph statement appeared on the Asian American Studies department page in the wake of intense violence in Gaza and Israel. ....

UC and Cal State systems plan to require coronavirus vaccinations in the fall

The University of California and California State University systems announced Thursday that they plan to require that all students, faculty and staff be vaccinated before returning to campuses in the fall.
The announcements are the largest vaccine requirement directives that U.S. higher education has yet seen, according to the Los Angeles Times, impacting more than 1 million members of the two public university systems.
The requirements, however, are not yet final. Both universities are waiting for a vaccine to receive full approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) before putting the directives into effect. The Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines are both being administered under an emergency-use authorization from the FDA. ....
