Through vaccination or infection, doctors predict Florida will hit herd immunity to COVID-19
Catherine Hawley reports
TAMPA, Fla. - The coronavirus is sweeping through unvaccinated populations across the globe, and especially in Florida.
Bay Area experts believe this will be the final wave of the pandemic because, after this spike, we should hit herd immunity because the majority of people will have either been vaccinated – or infected.
Modeling done by University of South Florida researchers shows our region could be headed for a record-breaking spike in COVID-19 cases, with a peak likely in mid-September.
The numbers that I m seeing in terms of daily infection rates are doubling every seven days. And that s the fastest that I ve seen since I started doing the calculations back in July of last year, explained Dr. Thomas Unnasch, USF College of Public Health Distinguished Professor. ....

Testing for work, travel reveals breakthrough COVID cases, experts say
Catherine Hawley reports
TAMPA, Fla. - Florida now leads the nation in new coronavirus cases. The majority are among the unvaccinated, but some folks who are fully vaccinated are also testing positive for COVID-19.
U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan is the latest example of a so-called breakthrough case, contracting COVID-19 even though the Congressman is fully vaccinated.  In a statement, Buchanan said this should serve as a cautionary tale, adding …we must remain vigilant in the fight against COVID-19.
Most of the stuff that we re seeing in the breakthrough infections are like three days sniffles, summer cold type thing, said Dr. Thomas Unnasch, USF College of Public Health Distinguished Professor. ....

Study: Open middle seat on planes limits COVID-19 spread up to 57%

Study: Open middle seat on planes limits COVID-19 spread up to 57%
Catherine Hawley reports
TAMPA, Fla. - Next month, all of the major U.S. Airlines will be back to packing full flights, however, a new study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows blocking those middle seats was a good thing.
Having an empty middle seat can cut coronavirus transmission up to 57%, the study shows.
Industry experts say do not expect these findings to prompt commercial airlines to start distancing passengers again. Still, this data shows that was a smart decision early on in the pandemic.
The CDC study is based on modeling, not real-world data. The report suggests distancing on planes, including leaving middle seats open, can reduce the risk of COVID-19 exposure to passengers by 23% to 57%. ....
